Bone Grafting
Bone Grafting for Dental Implants
Bone grafting is a surgical procedure that rebuilds or augments the jawbone to create a solid foundation for dental implants. When a tooth is lost, the surrounding bone begins to resorb over time, often leaving insufficient bone volume for implant placement. A bone graft adds bone material to the deficient area, stimulating new bone growth and restoring the ridge to a suitable dimension for implant surgery.
At Serenity International Dental Clinic in Hanoi, Vietnam, bone grafting procedures are performed by experienced oral surgeons using proven grafting materials and techniques.
Who Needs Bone Grafting?
Bone grafting may be recommended if you:
- Have lost bone volume after tooth extraction, especially if the tooth was removed months or years ago
- Have experienced bone loss due to advanced periodontal disease
- Need dental implants but a 3D scan reveals insufficient bone height or width at the intended implant site
- Have suffered facial trauma that resulted in bone damage
- Require a sinus lift to place implants in the upper back jaw where the sinus cavity is too close to the ridge
Types of Bone Grafts
Socket Preservation Graft
Performed immediately after tooth extraction, this graft fills the empty socket with bone material to preserve ridge dimensions and prepare the site for a future implant.
Ridge Augmentation
Used when the jawbone has already resorbed significantly, ridge augmentation builds up the bone width or height to accommodate an implant.
Sinus Lift
A sinus lift raises the floor of the maxillary sinus and places bone graft material beneath it, creating enough bone depth in the upper jaw for implant placement.
Block Bone Graft
In cases of severe bone loss, a block of bone may be harvested from another area of the jaw or body and secured to the deficient site with screws.
Grafting Materials
Bone graft material may come from several sources:
- Autograft – bone harvested from the patient’s own body, considered the gold standard
- Allograft – processed human donor bone from a tissue bank
- Xenograft – processed animal-derived bone, most commonly bovine
- Synthetic graft – laboratory-made materials such as hydroxyapatite or beta-tricalcium phosphate
Your surgeon will recommend the most appropriate material based on the size and location of the defect.
The Bone Grafting Process
Evaluation
A 3D CBCT scan is taken to assess the extent of bone loss and determine the type of graft needed.
Surgery
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia. The gum tissue is reflected, the graft material is placed and stabilized, and a membrane may be used to protect the graft site. The tissue is then sutured closed.
Healing
Bone regeneration takes approximately four to nine months, depending on the size and type of graft. During this time, the graft material is gradually replaced by your natural bone.
Implant Placement
Once sufficient bone has formed, confirmed by imaging, dental implants can be placed in the grafted area.
Benefits
- Enables implant placement – restores bone volume so that implants can be safely and successfully placed
- Preserves facial structure – maintains the natural contour of the jaw and prevents the sunken appearance caused by bone loss
- High success rate – modern grafting techniques and materials produce predictable bone regeneration
- Supports long-term oral health – a strong bone foundation contributes to the longevity of implants and surrounding teeth
Aftercare
After bone grafting surgery, follow your surgeon’s instructions carefully. Avoid chewing on the surgical side, eat soft foods for the first week, and do not smoke, as smoking significantly impairs bone healing. Take prescribed medications including antibiotics and pain relievers as directed. Attend all follow-up appointments so your dentist can monitor healing progress.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is bone grafting painful?
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, so you should not feel pain during surgery. Post-operative discomfort is typically moderate and well-controlled with prescribed pain medication. Most patients report that the recovery is more comfortable than they expected.
How long does it take for a bone graft to heal?
Healing time varies depending on the type and size of the graft. Most grafts require four to nine months for complete bone maturation before implants can be placed.
Can I get a dental implant without bone grafting?
If you have adequate bone volume, grafting is not necessary. However, if imaging shows insufficient bone, a graft is required to ensure the implant has a stable foundation. In some cases, shorter or narrower implants or alternative techniques such as All-on-4 can reduce or eliminate the need for grafting.
What is the success rate of bone grafting?
Dental bone grafts have a high success rate, generally above 90 percent, when performed by an experienced surgeon with proper technique and post-operative care.
